What Are Cataracts?

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts are a common eye condition in which the normally clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy, resulting in blurry vision and a decline in visual acuity. At Monterey Bay Eye Center in Monterey, our ophthalmologists specialize in diagnosing and treating cataracts.

What are Cataracts?

When cataracts develop in one or both eyes, the lens becomes opaque and loses its transparency. While cataracts are often associated with the natural aging process, there are other factors that can contribute to their development, including:

Secondary Cataracts

Secondary cataracts can develop as a result of another underlying condition, such as diabetes. Certain medications, trauma to the eye, or prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can also contribute to the development of secondary cataracts.

Congenital Cataracts

Some individuals are born with or develop cataracts during infancy or childhood. Congenital cataracts may be caused by metabolic disorders, trauma, genetic factors, or infections during pregnancy.

Common Cataract Symptoms

Although symptoms may vary from person to person, the following are common signs of cataracts that can be identified during an eye exam:

  • Hazy or blurry vision
  • Sensitivity to bright lights, sunlight, or glare
  • Reduced visual clarity
  • Difficulty seeing in dim or low-light conditions
  • Double vision

Treating Cataracts

Cataract surgery is a common and highly successful procedure. It involves removing the cloudy lens of the eye and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Cataract surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis in a medical center, and it generally involves minimal discomfort and a quick recovery period.
